The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of two different methods of teaching in ESP courses. To achieve this objective, two groups of students of Economics were selected for the study. Each group consisted of 20 participants. Their level of proficiency in English and subject matter was tested by a sample of Michigan TOEFL test and a pre-test. The two groups were at the same level of proficiency in both general English and English for Students of Economics before receiving treatment. The first group attended a two-month ESP course whose medium of instruction was a combination of English and Persian. The second group attended a two-month ESP course whose medium of instruction was solely English. After this period of treatment, the two groups were tested by a post-test. The results showed that the second group was more successful in the post-test. These results suggest that those learners who are proficient in English and subject matter benefit more from courses that are taught solely in English. Finally, it was concluded that level of knowledge in English and subject matter, nature of the subject (theoretical or applied), and the skills that are the focus of the course are the main characteristics that must be taken into account in the process of planning for ESP courses.

Students’ Perception of the ESP Courses at the University of Prishtina2014 •
It is widely accepted that three main factors that have contributed to the growth of English for specific purposes (ESP) are the increased demand for English to suit particular needs of learners on the one hand, and on the other the developments in linguistics and educational psychology, factors that brought about the need for increased specialization in language learning (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987).Considering the diversity of study fields offered at the University of Prishtina, the paper in general investigates the English courses offered in different academic units, including the status, the content, as well as the outcomes of these courses. In particular, in their research the authors focus on ESP courses offered in two University of Prishtina academic units: Faculty of Philology and Faculty of Economy. The paper presents the analysis of the course content, its delivery, as well as outcomes, highlighting similarities and differences, as well as various interrelated factors that i...

The introduction of Bologna process into Serbian universities has made English language obligatory course for all the faculties due to the recognition of its important role in modern life, as well as its function as a lingua franca. Teachers of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) are faced with the challenge of designing a course by choosing relevant course book and teaching materials that meet both their and students' goals. However, it appears that non-English major students are not so enthusiastic about learning ESP-the lack of enthusiasm being the greatest among those with low English proficiency level. The present study aims to investigate the factors influencing non-English majors' achievement in learning ESP. The need for the study has been identified by the fact that most of the non-English majors have low achievement in learning ESP. The study has been conducted among the first year students of Economics at the State university of Novi Pazar. Data has been collected by the means of a questionnaire administered among 92 students. Some of the findings include the following: (a) more than half students consider English irrelevant for their studies; (b) students hold negative attitude towards learning ESP; (c) students' background knowledge of English influences their attitude towards learning ESP. After the analysis and discussion of the results, the author proposes possible future steps for improving the current situation with special emphasis on the foundation of Foreign Language Center as a way of obtaining the basics of English language necessary for taking courses in ESP.
In the Polish educational system it is mainly institutions of higher education that conduct English for SpeciÞ c Purpose (ESP) courses, partly because of the regulations of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, which stipulate that a B.A. graduate should know a foreign language at least at the B2 level of CEFR and its specialized variety 1. This article presents an analysis of Polish ministerial and faculty documents such as ministerial teaching standards and faculty learning outcomes that inß uence the teaching of ESP at tertiary level in Poland. It also presents an analysis of ESP syllabi from eight higher education institutions published at Inter-net websites of faculties of economics and management. The aim of the analysis was to see how ministerial and faculty documents deÞ ne ESP and what type of ESP students of economics and management learn and what are the main course materials for syllabus design for students of economics, management and their various specializations. All the documents and syllabi were subject to qualitative analysis which showed that neither teaching standards nor faculty learning outcomes provide a clear indication of what language for professional or speciÞ c purposes is supposed to be. Furthermore, it showed that while teaching students of economics and management , language teachers reach for business English course books which offer a general set of topics and skills, and use one and the same course books with students of different specialties. This shows that the lack of clear guidelines from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education makes it difÞ cult for teachers to provide ESP courses beyond a certain level of generality.
