The prime aim and objective of this study was to explore and analyse the difficulties faced by the hospital professionals in knowing and using medical vocabulary (terms) in day to day professional life. It is generally known that English for Specific Purpose (ESP) is different from other general vocabulary courses in many ways. In order to carry out the study, subjects comprised 76 trainees who attended a professional development/training course on the medical terminology. The location of the training course was Jeddah (KSA) which was attended by four types of hospital professionals and trainees. Apart from the personal experience in the past and the current 30 hour-training, a self developed questionnaire was also used to elicit required data. The results of the survey indicated that most of the trainees faced difficulties due to: difficulties in English, Greek and Latin borrowing, difficult word-structure and lack of opportunities to practice. Based on the findings, it could be suggested that the learners should apply some strategies to pursue self-learning via web resource and peer learning.

The effect of in-service English education on medical professionals' language proficiency2012 •
Despite its inevitable significance, the effect of in-service English education on medical professionals has rarely been studied longitudinally. The reason can be issues such as physicians' heavy workload, commuting problems, inappropriate class times, and inexperienced teaching staff. A needs assessment worksheet was administered to faculty members of Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran and the responses were analyzed. A project for the promotion of faculty members' English proficiency was formulated. Then, following a placement test, 235 applicants from the university colleges and hospitals were classified into 28 homogeneous groups. After four terms of instruction, the participants' scores on the pre- and post- assessments were analyzed. There was significant improvement in participants' total scores on different communicative skills (P<0.001). Regarding individual skills also, they achieved meaningful gains on listening (P<0.001), writi...

In this pursuit, the study employed a quantitative exploratory approach as a 30-item questionnaire based on a 5-point Likert scale was constructed and disseminated to professional nurses. 82 participants took part in the study. Data were collected and analyzed using the IBM SPSS program. Results revealed that 1) the English language significantly influences the COPA model nursing core competencies according to perceptions of the participants and 2) English enhances the core competencies through improving nurses' assessment and intervention, communication, critical thinking, human caring and relationships, management, leadership, teaching and finally knowledge integration into practice and finally 3) male nurses are more aware of the importance of English in improving their core competencies than female nurses.
