Conflict Mitigation in Enhancing Discipline in Kenya s Secondary Schools2014 •
In any society, conflict is an endemic factor that shapes and determines relationship in all facets of life. Evidently, in a school community, conflicts are bound to occur given the different views, needs and values of the people. The study examines conflict mitigation in enhancing discipline in Kenyan secondary schools and is anchored on human needs theory. The study employed a descriptive survey design and embraced both quantitative and qualitative methods to collect data from secondary school students, head teachers and guidance and counseling officers. The study concluded that the failure to train teachers on skills of conflict management and non involvement of students in decision making, are the causes of conflict in secondary schools. The study recommends that key conflict resolution and peacemaking skills should be introduced in schools and in management and training of teachers. Student Council is a representative structure through which students in a secondary school become involved in school affairs. The study set out to investigate student council participation in the management of discipline in public secondary schools in Teso North Sub-County in Busia County, Kenya. The study sought to establish: the influence of student council participation in the formulation of rules and regulations on management of discipline, and the influence of student council involvement in formulating punishment on the management of discipline. The target population was 7379 students and 189 teachers and 27 principals from 27 schools. The research employed descriptive survey design using a random sample of 365 students, 18 teachers and 9 principals. This sample size was determined using Krejcie and Morgan's table of sample determination and using coefficient variation of 30% and a standard error of 2% through stratified simple random sampling technique. The data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire. The study established that schools involved students in designing punishment but students never took punishment positively and that common disciplinary problems experienced in schools was due to lack of students involvement. It was further established that students were haphazardly involved in the school management of students' discipline. Thus the study recommends schools to empower students' council in which students' views and ideas are heard and discussed; Ministry of education to organize and offer seminars where school heads are well sensitized on involving students in school management.

SCHOOL STAKEHOLDERS' COLLABORATIVE STRATEGIES FOR MANAGEMENT OF DISCIPLINE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ILEMBE DISTRICT2021 •
This research study explored collaborative strategies used by school stakeholders for managing discipline in the ILembe District. Purposive sampling was used in this study to select study participants from stakeholders in the ILembe district in KwaZulu-Natal. A qualitative research approach was used and a case study methodology design was used for indepth data collection, in the form of interviews. Data was analysed by means of a coding process to generate a description of the setting or people, as well as categories or themes for analysis. The findings of the study revealed effective collaborative strategies used by stakeholders of two schools. In implementing strategies collaboratively, it was found that two out of the four schools that formed part of this study, were able to manage discipline effectively using strategies such as assertive discipline, restorative discipline and building a good rapport with learners. The effective collaborative strategies used by stakeholders of these schools included the inclusion of learners in the decision making process, establishment of a rapport and clear lines of communication with learners, implementing the school Code of Conduct at all levels, and the assistance of all stakeholders who had a vested interest in education. The findings also indicated that restorative discipline was collaboratively implemented by all stakeholders of two out of four schools, to manage discipline effectively. It is, therefore, recommended that all stakeholders employ collaboration when implementing strategies aimed at managing discipline.
