This study investigated parental influence on career choice of secondary school students in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State. The sample comprised of 250 students randomly selected from 3 government and 2 private schools in Enugu South Local Government Area of Enugu State. A questionnaire was constructed for each respondent by the researcher and administered to elicit responses from the respondents. From the analysis of the data collected, the findings of the study show that there is significant influence of parents’ level of education on student’s career choice, there is also significant influence of parents’ socio-economic status and occupational background on the career choice of students. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made and it was concluded that parents should educate their children on how to make a career choice and not impose on them their own preferred career choice.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of parental influence on adolescents' career choice on secondary schools students in Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State. The sample consisted of three hundred respondents who were randomly selected from ten purposely selected secondary schools (3 Model Colleges, 4 Non-Model Colleges, and 3 Private Colleges). The instrument used was a questionnaire which was administered to the respondents personally by the researcher. Five (5) null hypotheses were formulated and tested. Chi-square, using analysis of contingency table was used to test the hypotheses. All hypotheses were tested at the 0.05 level of significance of variable of sex, class of school, and type of school as to the effects of parental influence on adolescents' career choice on secondary schools students in the Local Government Area. The findings of the study showed that 48.36% of the respondents agreed to parents influencing their career choice. On the average, 21.5% of the respondents agreed that their parents' line of business influenced their career choice, while 78.5% disagreed. On the whole, 30% of the respondents agreed that they chose the family career because they need to sustain the family business. In addition, three (3) out of the five (5) null hypotheses tested were accepted because there were no significant differences in the variables compared. These were hypotheses 1, 3, and 5. Hypotheses 2 and 4 were rejected as there were significant differences in the variables compared. The results of these findings seem to indicate that adolescents in secondary schools in Badagry Local Government Area of Lagos State have some form of independence in making career choices.

VARIABLES INFLUENCING CAREER CHOICE AMONG PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN OSUN STATE, NIGERIAChoosing a career is an important step that influences the aspirations of undergraduate admission seekers. Students sometimes are unable to make a decision about the career they wish to pursue later in life. Stakeholders in the educational sectors have observed that most highschool leavers in Nigeria often make wrong decisions as regard to their career due to motivation, peer group and parental influence. Therefore, this paper examined variables influencing career choice among highschool students, Osun State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design while 10 public high schools in Irewole and Isokan Local Government, Osun State were selected using total enumeration method technique. Simple random sampling technique was adopted to select 20 students from each school sampled to have a total of 200 respondents. Questionnaire was the research instrument developed and used to collect data. This instrument was subjected to reliability through Cronbach’s Alpha method and 0.79 of reliability coefficient was found. Simple percentages, frequency counts, regression and Pearson Product Moment Correlation were used in analyzing the data collected. The study revealed that opportunity available to the students, motivation, peer group and parental influence relatively and jointly contributed to career choice among undergraduate admission seekers. The result equally indicated that career choice among highschool students, Osun State was found to be poor. Government should employed more teaching and teaching personnel to all public high schools in order to provide the necessary assistance and support for students from different parental background so as to enhance their career aspiration.Parents should not allow their educational background, income level and occupation influence become barriers for career choice of their children. Career choice is a complex decision for students since it determines the kind of profession that they intend topursue in life. This study investigates the determinant of career choice among secondary school students in Lagos State for educational material development. Three research questions guided the study and a survey research design was employed for the study.This was researched into with the usage of questionnaire containing twenty- four items were administered to one hundred and nine (109) students in four schools within Oshodi local Government area. The data collected was analysed using mean and standard deviation statistics method. The findings showed that the home background and gender of the students did influence the students’ career choice except their learning outcomes which have greater influence on their career choice in the secondary schools. It was recommended thatParents should not allow their professional and educational background to overwhelm their children intellectual abilities in making choice of career.Parents should not encourage their children to choose high rated occupation because of its economic status but should engage more in guiding them in to choose courses that suit their intellectual abilities.Teachers should also be allowed to identify the best course for each child through continuous assessment and career counselling. Teachers should avoid being gender biased in their appraisal of students’ performance in the classroom.

ABSTRACT The first aim of this study was to examine how gender, home background and student learning outcome influence choice of career among secondary school students in Nigeria. The second purpose of the study was to determine the extent of the problems and proffer suggestions that will help the students in making valuable and meaningful choice of career rather than making a wrong choice determined outside their interest, capability and talent. One hundred and twenty inhabitants (120) of Lagos State participated in the study. The questionnaire developed by the researcher. The statistical took employed to test the hypotheses study is simple percentage, the research findings, showed that a higher percentage of majority of the respondents are of the opinion that guidance and counseling in schools determine students’ choice of career by a mean score Furthermore, there is medium positive relationship between the choice of career and students academic performance.

The study investigated determinants of family background variables on the career choice of secondary school students in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The purpose of the study is to determine which of the family background variable that influences the career choice of secondary school in Ekiti State. To also find out the degree at which each of the variables influences the career choice of these students. Two questions were raised to guide the study with one null hypothesis. Descriptive of survey design was employed in the study. The population was all senior secondary school students where 500 students were sampled through stratified and Simple Random Sampling Methods. A self-designed instrument named family background variables and career choice questionnaires (FBVCCQ) was used to collect relevant information. The instrument was validated through test-retest with the reliability coefficient of 0.78. The instrument was administered and collected immediately. The collected data were analysed using frequency counts and percentage, ANOVA was used to test the only one hypothesis formulated. The results revealed that family background variables generally have an influence on the choice of career among the secondary school students in Ekiti State. The study suggested that career program should be put in place by the counselling unit in the school to help these students in preparing for their future.

DETERMINANTS OF CAREER CHOICE AMONG PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN PORT HARCOURT LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, RIVERS STATE2022 •
The study examined determinants of career choice among public senior secondary school students in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State. The design of this study was a descriptive survey design.1020 Students from SS1-SS3 classes constitute the population of the study drawn from five (5) selected public senior secondary school students in Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Rivers State. The stratified random sampling technique was used to select 200 students from the population of the study. Two research question and two hypotheses guided the study. The research design was descriptive survey. The study used researcher-made questionnaire titled "Students' Career Choice Questionnaire (SCCQ)".The content validity of the instrument was conducted by two experts and reliability of 0.80 was obtained. Mean and standard Deviation were use to test the research questions while the One Way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was used to analysis the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was discovered that personal interest has a significant influence on career choice of students and teachers' influence career choice of students. Based on the findings the following recommendations were made that parents should be reorientated by secondary school counselors on the reason why they should not force their children into choosing their line of vacation as this may not be the vocation that their children wants.

In-School Adolescents And Career Choice: The Case Of Ekiti State, Nigeria2010 •
This paper examines in-school adolescents and career choices in Ekiti State, Nigeria. The sample consists of two hundred randomly selected parents and in-school adolescents from four local government areas in Ekiti State. Two hypotheses were generated and tested at 0.05 level of significance using t-test statistical analysis. The results showed that there were no significant differences between parental influence, as well as gender influence of in-school adolescents in choice of career. The paper concludes that parents need to give adequate career information to their adolescents and have positive job values. Also, females need to decide whether to start their family first or settle on a career and start their family later.
