Global studies show the need for parental involvement in children’s school readiness. In Kenya, studies show that students’ poor performance in school is mainly caused by lack of school readiness. This study was guided by the Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory which regards children as the center of various layers of systems. Survey research design was used to guide the study. The location of the study was Kasarani Division. The target population was parents with children aged 5 to 6 years in pre-unit class enrolled in pre-primary schools in Kasarani Division. Questionnaires and interview schedules were used to obtain data from the respondents. Pilot study was done in two pre-schools within Kasarani Division. Content validity was used to determine the validity of the instruments, while the reliability of the instruments was determined using test re-test method. Data was collected in two stages. Descriptive and inferential methods were used to analyze the collected data. ANOVA and Chi-square tests were used to test the null hypotheses at a significance level of 0.05. The findings showed that various factors were influenced parents’ perception on children’s school readiness. It was recommended that managers and administrators in public preschools ought to put systems in place to ensure that parents’ perceptions on school readiness are enhanced.

Relative Contribution of Different Levels of Parental Involvement to Primary School Readiness in Preschool Pupils in Nairobi County2015 •
Recent developments have led to a lot of emphasis being placed on early childhood education. Massive growth has also occurred in this segment of the education sector. Emphasis continues to be placed not just on growth but also on quality of the educational experiences that children are exposed to. In Kenya reports continue to emerge of pupils in primary school who lack numeracy and literacy competencies expected at their level. This inevitably shines the spotlight on the quality of educational experiences at the preschool level, which lays the foundation for all future learning and later success in school. One of the parameters of quality is parental involvement. In Kenya this parameter happens to be amongst the least understood. This paper sought to shed some light on the contribution of this aspect of quality to primary school readiness in preschool pupils in Nairobi. Parental involvement at six levels of involvement was measured for a sample of 150 parents of preschool pupils, wh...

Differences in School-readiness among Pre-school Children in Rural and Urban areas of Kisumu County, Kenya2021 •
This study compared primary school preparedness of urban and rural preschool children in Kisumu county, Kenya. Children were assessed on their level of learning and development in the following domains: pre-academic skills (pre-literacy and pre-mathematics, executive function, and socioemotional cognition. The sample consisted of 390 preschool children who had completed their curriculum and were transitioning to Grade One. Children were assessed using an adapted and validated form of the Measurement of Development and Early Learning (MODEL) global item set. We hypothesized that urban children would score higher on all domains of learning and development than rural children. Results showed that indeed urban children were more prepared for primary school than were rural children in all the domains of learning examined in this study. In order to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 on equitable quality education that ensures life-long learning for all, county and national government ...
School readiness is an important concern for parents and teachers because it is a multifaceted process which encompasses all the developmental areas and various skills of children rather than only focusing on cognitive and literacy skills. In particular, preschool and first grade teachers experience the positive and negative sides of the process of school readiness. In this study, basic qualitative research was used to compare teachers’ views about school readiness. The participants were 35 preschool and 35 first grade teachers and a semi-structured interview protocol developed by the researchers was used to collect data. Qualitative analysis was performed at the end of the study and according to the findings, the following five main themes were determined: definition of school readiness, the effective people and institutions in the school readiness process, preschool education for school readiness, the difficulties encountered in the school readiness process and suggestions for effective school readiness. Also, the findings showed that preschool and first grade teachers tended to have similar views related school readiness. Exploring the construct of school readiness based on child development for kindergarten children2017 •
Indonesian government has regulated that the basic age of readiness of a child to attend elementary schools is 7 years old. In fact, some children are not exactly 7 years old when they first go to school because they develop more rapidly. This study is aimed at investigating some aspects of child development which affect their readiness to attend elementary school. The subjects were 101 grade 1, 2, and 3 teachers of elementary schools in Yogyakarta, a special Region in Indonesia. The data were collected through interviews. The results of the data collection were analyzed using both descriptive quantitative and qualitative techniques. The results of the study show some aspects of child development affecting their readiness to attend elementary schools, including cognitive and language ability, social emotional skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, arts, religion and moral values, and some others. Beside these aspects, some problems in grades 1, 2, and 3 are also found. This ...

Children’s School Readiness: Teachers’ and Parents’ PerceptionsThe initial period of adjustment is something to be concerned about since it serves as a period, allowing to lay foundation for education which will contribute to children’s future academic life. It is not an easy period for children due to several school demands and expectations which should be fulfilled by children. To deal with this, children’s school readiness to attend their primary school is required. This qualitative research seeks to find out factors influencing children’s readiness to attend a primary school. The subjects of the research involved teachers and parents of children who planned to apply for admission into primary schools. The research results indicate that both teachers and parents of children shared the same perceptions regarding factors influencing the school readiness: cognitive and noncognitive factors. The former which involve reading, writing, and calculating skills are regarded significant since such skills are used as admission prerequisites for primary...

Parents’ Perception in Child Readiness for School in Pre-Primary Education in Urban Area2021 •
2021 •
Early childhood educators have traditionally linked school success to parental involvement and they frequently fail to establish strong links between home and school. This study sought to establish the correlation between parents’ decision making in school and school-community linkages in public primary schools in Eldoret East Sub County. The study adopted the Ecological Systems Theory on child’s development within the context of the system of relationships that form his or her environment. This study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Descriptive survey research design was adopted because it was appropriate for obtaining factual information about the correlation between parent’s decision making in school and school-community linkages in public primary schools in Eldoret East Sub County. This study used a descriptive survey research design. The sample size comprised of 30 head teachers, 240 teachers and 30 school chairpersons. Simple random sampling was used to select tea...

An examination of primary school teachers' perception of school readiness programs2023 •
School readiness implies that children are prepared for school, families are prepared to help them learn, and schools are prepared for them. It depends on the development of physical, cognitive, language, and socio-emotional development. This study was intended to examine the primary school teachers’ perception of school readiness. The participants were 30 teachers of 2 primary schools (Argo and Hogoba) from one of the 8 sub cities called Tabor, Hawassa City. The sub-city was selected using a lottery method and schools were selected by systematic random sampling technique. A survey design was employed to conduct this study. The questionnaire was the main data-gathering tool used. Independent-sample t-test, one-way ANOVA, and other descriptive statistics were employed to analyze data. The findings of the study reveal that primary school teachers have sufficient knowledge about school readiness programs. However, it was revealed that there is a substantial relationship between the per...
