In this era of globalization and technological revolution, education is considered as a first step for every human activity. It plays a vital role in the development of human capital and is linked with an individual’s well-being and opportunities for better living. In Ethiopia rate of enrollment in school has been growing tremendously since 1990’s. But the quality of education or student’s academic achievement in education is still under questions. Previous studies have never attempted multilevel approach to find student level and school level factors affecting students' academic performance. The main objective of this study was to identify both student level and school level factors affecting student academic performance and to see if there was school variation. Cluster proportional stratified sampling technique was to select sample students. The study has used two level linear regression approaches that enabled us to disaggregate total variation into school level variation and student level variation. The intercept only model showed that school level variance was significant (p=0.000) and 47% of total variation was attributed by schools. The fixed effect model showed that male students performed better than female students. Attitude of students towards learning, high school aspiration, motivation of families to teach, family size of 6-7 and class size of 30-40 had positive impact in academic performance. Whereas workload at home was negatively affecting students' academic performance.
Quality education is the question of many countries. Students' achievement were a measure of teaching-learning process. Scholars suggested that regardless of the subject nature, many factors affect students' achievements in each school subject. This study is an attempt to determine factors influencing academic achievements of grade 8, 10 and 12 students in Debre Tabor Town (DT) and Bahir Dar Town (BDT) in 2013-2014 academic year with achievements variations occurred in student, class and school levels. Depending on the objectives descriptive analysis and multivariate multilevel linear regression analysis with maximum likelihood estimation were used to analyze the data. The results of BDT data show that school type and average work load of teachers jointly show a significant effect on both subjects; Teachers experience in terms of Mathematics, class size and availability of reference and text books in terms of English show significant influence on academic achievements. From the study, it was found out that multilevel modeling is much better than the single level ordinary regression model in fitting the data and in explaining the variations of the academic achievement at different levels. Likewise, on average non-governmental school students achievements were better than governmental. It can be concluded from this study that the variation of academic achievement of students in each grade level of mathematics and English subjects high within class followed by between schools. It can be recommended that academic facilities and managements at schools and home, and students personal efforts need to be improved in order to achieve better quality of education in all fields of studies at high standard.

Factors Affecting Student's Academic Performance in Ahuntegen General Secondary School, North Wollo Zone, EthiopiaThe Academic performance of the student depends on a number of factors such as teachers, student and school related variables. Hence, this study was conducted to analyze the factors which affect the academic performance of students. Primary and secondary data were used for the study. In this paper, students' results were taken from record office. Multiple regressions, chisquare test, correlation analysis were used to analyze the data. The result of the chi-square test and correlation analysis portrayed that teachers educational level, experience, subject matter knowledge, students interest towards education, attendance, parents educational level, parents income, distance of the school from the students home, the availability of materials, text book and language skill of students have an influence for the academic success of students. Besides, keeping other variables constant, 14.8 % and 62.7% variability of students' academic performance was explained by teacher and school related variables whereas the overall 74.2 % of variations of students' results were explained by 19 variables applied for this study. The overall relationship was statistically significant (F19, 23=8.592, P<0.001). It is recommended that analyzing and understanding of teachers, students, parents, school educational expert and related variables are very essential to improve the academic performance of students.

Empirical Investigation and Analysis of Factors Contributing to Students’ Academic PerformanceIntrodction In the process of learning, there are many problems/factors that challenge students' academic performance. According to Tavani and Loch(2003), Admasu (2004),Culver and Sinclair(2000) parental expectation, peer group influence, socioeconomic status, family structure, types of parental involvement in children's schooling, children's behavior, academic self concept, and school environment are some of the factors which can affect the performance of learning activities and students achievement. Adeyemo and Babajide (2012) also reveal that there are several factors that can gradually lay the foundation of fallen achievement, which cause discrepancy in academic performance of students. According to (Vellymalay, 2012), with the rise in educational fields, the wealth and wishes of parents appear to play a more dominant role in a child's education. Thus, the impact of the parent's socioeconomic status on parental involvement and their child's educational achievement has been of great concern. In Ethiopia, ESDP IV sets two priorities under general education-improving the quality and increasing access and equity with distinct program for each while student performance at school level and on grade ten national examination still remains low (MoE, 2010). Most of the rural people have been participating in school expansion by contributing their share and hence the role of parental participation is increasing from time to time. As a result, primary schools are urged to give special attention to the attainment of their defined roles and duties and become efficient. It has to be reformed so as to overcome the educational challenges faced by adolescents who are coming from different economic, social and cultural backgrounds and having various interests (UNESCO, 2004). Many researches indicate that, parent related factors such attitude parents have towards their children's education and poor educational support as well as lack of training, time and interest from the side of parents may influence the academic performance of students (Okpala et al., 2001). For example, better socioeconomic status of parents has positive relationship with student academic performance. Students from low economic status and illiterate parent may not be supported appropriately and my not get the necessary. As the result, the academic performance of this student may decrease. To perform better in education, motivation from Abstract Parents play an indispensable role in students' academic performance. This study aimed at to investigate the parent related factors affecting students' academic performance in Secondary schools of five different zones, Oromiya Regional State. Descriptive survey design was employed to carry out the study which enabled the researcher to describe the present status of the problem under study. The necessary data for the study was collected from 83 students, 68 teachers, 83 parents and 11 vice-principals selected through stratified simple random sampling, purposive sampling, and availability sampling respectively. The instruments employed to collect data from respondents were questionnaire, interview and document analysis. The quantitative data gathered from respondents were analyzed using percentage, mean, one-way ANOVA and the qualitative data was analyzed through narration. The results of the study revealed that the attitude parents have towards their children's education and low level of support affected students' academic performance. In addition, lack of training, time and interest from the side of parents; and socioeconomic status as well as socio-cultural factors related to parents are responsible for low academic performance of students in Secondary schools of Oromiya Region. The conclusion, it is hoped that provide the necessary basis for policy makers, planners, teachers and school administrators to realize the magnitude of the problem and design viable and effective community-based intervention measures for mitigating the problem under consideration. Thus, it is recommendable that the Secondary schools have to participated parents, students, teachers and community members to enhance the academic performance of students as well as school performance.
