One of the most pressing issues that most countries, including Malaysia and Singapore, are facing today is meeting the needs of their children with special needs. Teachers in mainstream schools (as well as special schools) have seen more and more children with special needs in their regular classroom settings and these children are unable to cope with the regular curriculum. Families with children with special needs are also desperate for help from the schools their children are attending as they are unable to cope with them at home. As the community begins to see more and more children with special needs in their midst, there is now a conscious awareness of the need to provide adequate services and appropriate resources to support these children. In this paper, the authors have attempted to raise this issue by exploring and questioning what kind of support teachers, family and community can provide in terms of services and resources for children with special needs, if there is, indeed, such a support available.

The aim of this paper is to illustrate a system of added support created by special educators and rehabilitators working in School for primary and secondary education with a dormitory “Vuk Karadžić” in the administrative area of Sombor, Republic of Serbia. According to official school documentation there where a total of 130 requests for additional support submitted for the 2017/18 school year, from pre-school institutions, as well as schools, in the administrative area of Sombor. Of that, 10 requests (7.69%) were sent from pre-school institutions in the city of Sombor, and 15 requests (11.53%) from surrounding villages. 65 requests (50%) were submitted by elementary schools located in Sombor, and 40 requests (30.77%) from the villages in the administrative area of Sombor. Pupils with intellectual disabilities, disorders in the field of pervasive developmental disorders, as well as persons with motor and speech disorders, are the most common users of additional support. This type of support in education represents a significant area of work when children with disabilities are concerned; hence it is our belief that this segment of work should be better developed throughout the country. Additional support is of great help to children with disabilities and to their teachers and educators, as well as parents, in the process of overcoming all the difficulties that they face when transitioning to an inclusive society in the educational system. In the long run, an analysis such as this one can help address possible difficulties that all participants in the process of education and training are faced with.
