The purpose of the study was to investigate the " effect of selected yoga asana on quality of life of chronic low back pain patients. Method: The study was conducted on chronic low back patients of Haridwar district of Uttarakhand, India and age ranging from 25 to 40 years. Total thirty male/female chronic low back pain patients selected as subject (N=30). These subjects were selected in terms of purposive sample from Haridwar Pawanamuktasana. The data was collected by administration of the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire for finding out the quality of life. It was hypothesized that six week of yoga training would significantly affect the quality of life of chronic low back pain patients. The data collected on quality of life was analyzed by dependent " t " test. The level of significance for testing the hypothesis was set at 0.05. Findings: The mean values and standard deviation of pre-test and post-test of quality of life of subjects were 21.40, 1.83 and 4.03, 2.67 respectively. Significant yogic training effect was found for the quality of life of CLBP. (t cal =27.98>t tab =2.04). The result showed that Yogic training significantly affect the quality of life of chronic low back pain patients.

A randomised controlled trial of yoga for the treatment of chronic low back pain: Results of a pilot study2010 •
2022 •
This is a controlled randomized trial which evaluated the clinical and molecular changes resulting from Integrated approach of yoga therapy (IAYT) as an adjunct regimen and compared it with usual care for the management of chronic low back pain patients. We enrolled 29 adult patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). Patients were randomly divided into two groups. Control group received the usual care of treatment as per institutional protocol. The yoga group received IAYT as an adjunct to usual care. Primary outcomes were pain Intensity assessed by verbal numerical rating scale (VNRS) and functional ability assessed by Modified Oswestry Disability Index (MODI). Secondary outcomes were pain catastrophizing, quality of life, fear of movement related to CLBP, type of pain, levels of ß-Endorphin and TNF α and Salivary CGRP. All parameters were measured at baseline, one month, and three months. Significant decrease in VNRS score at 1 and 3 months was observed in both the groups with ...

Yoga for Chronic Low Back Pain2011 •
Previous studies indicate that yoga may be an effective treatment for chronic or recurrent low back pain. To compare the effectiveness of yoga and usual care for chronic or recurrent low back pain. Parallel-group, randomized, controlled trial using computer-generated randomization conducted from April 2007 to March 2010. Outcomes were assessed by postal questionnaire. (International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number Register: ISRCTN 81079604) 13 non-National Health Service premises in the United Kingdom. 313 adults with chronic or recurrent low back pain. Yoga (n = 156) or usual care (n = 157). All participants received a back pain education booklet. The intervention group was offered a 12-class, gradually progressing yoga program delivered by 12 teachers over 3 months. Scores on the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) at 3 (primary outcome), 6, and 12 (secondary outcomes) months; pain, pain self-efficacy, and general health measures at 3, 6, and 12 months (secondary outcomes). 93 (60%) patients offered yoga attended at least 3 of the first 6 sessions and at least 3 other sessions. The yoga group had better back function at 3, 6, and 12 months than the usual care group. The adjusted mean RMDQ score was 2.17 points (95% CI, 1.03 to 3.31 points) lower in the yoga group at 3 months, 1.48 points (CI, 0.33 to 2.62 points) lower at 6 months, and 1.57 points (CI, 0.42 to 2.71 points) lower at 12 months. The yoga and usual care groups had similar back pain and general health scores at 3, 6, and 12 months, and the yoga group had higher pain self-efficacy scores at 3 and 6 months but not at 12 months. Two of the 157 usual care participants and 12 of the 156 yoga participants reported adverse events, mostly increased pain. There were missing data for the primary outcome (yoga group, n = 21; usual care group, n = 18) and differential missing data (more in the yoga group) for secondary outcomes. Offering a 12-week yoga program to adults with chronic or recurrent low back pain led to greater improvements in back function than did usual care. Arthritis Research UK.
Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy of yoga as an intervention for chronic low back pain (CLBP) using a meta-analytical approach. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that examined pain and⁄or functional disability as treatment outcomes were included. Post-treatment and follow-up outcomes were assessed. Methods: A comprehensive search of relevant electronic databases, from the time of their inception until November 2011, was conducted. Cohen's d effect sizes were calculated and entered in a random-effects model. Results: Eight RCTs met the criteria for inclusion (eight assessing functional disability and five assessing pain) and involved a total of 743 patients. At post-treatment, yoga had a medium to large effect on functional disability (d=0.645) and pain (d=0.623). Despite a wide range of yoga styles and treatment durations, heterogeneity in post-treatment effect sizes was low. Follow-up effect sizes for functional disability and pain were smaller, but remained significant (d...

Outcome Of Yoga Module As Non-Pharmacological Intervention For Chronic Low Back Pain: A Single Arm Clinical StudyLow back pain (LBP) is a symptom, not a disease. It is an omnipresent health problem which is defined as pain in lower parts of the back (Borenstein, 1998). It has called the attention of health authorities for their frightening proportions and are considered epidemic in the general population (Deyo, 1998). It is estimated that about 10 million Brazilians are disabled by LBP and around 70% of the world's population will suffer one episode in the lifetime (Silva et al, 2004). LBP can be restricted to the lumbar area or can irradiate through the lower limbs. It originates from injury or muscle strain, ligament, skeletal, neurological, joints, tumor and of pelvic organs reflex (Borenstein, 1998; Cruz, 2003; Michelena, 2004). Hatha Yoga is concerned with the individual on his totality (Eliade, 1996) once it is based on the practice of physical postures, mental and spiritual processes, diet and personal hygiene (Gharote, 2002). It is considered a natural way of strengthening and stretching muscle (Kuvalayananda, 2005). Hatha Yoga has been referred to as alternative way of physical therapy (Iyengar, 1979; Fernandes, 1992), although it is not the main goal of Yoga (Borrel, 1973). The present study was aimed at assessing the profile and prevalence of lumbago in Hatha Yoga practitioners as well as the existence of some evidence that this practice would avoid or decrease low back pain. A transversal and non-random study was used to get data from field evaluation. As a tool was used for self-assessment questionnaire with closed and open questions about associated with Hatha Yoga practice and spinal diseases and The Oswestry low back pain Questionnaire (Fairbank et al, 1983) culturally adapted to Portuguese language (Bracher, 2000). Were evaluated 116 practitioners of Hatha Yoga, from the Yoga Specialization Course of UniFMU Liberdade Campus, São Paulo, in 2007. The prevalence of low back pain was 60.2%, being the majority of cases of was related to tensional muscle (57% of the total reported), while Michelena (2004) reported being 70% in international clinical practice outpatient. Spinal curves problems as scoliosis and hipercifose, and disc herniation were diseases that appear in the second place (11%), well above the figures reported by Michelena (2004), <1% and 4% respectively. The Oswestry Questionnaire showed that 96.6% of the population had minimum disability, 2.6% suffered from moderate disability and 0.9% of severe disability. The physiology associated to Hatha Yoga practice is quit complex, involving psyconeuroendocrine, muscle and fascial systems. The practice of Hatha Yoga relieves low back pain crisis, but it is not capable to completely avoid them. The major prevalence was acute LBP due to muscular stresses.

The Efficacy of Yoga as an Intervention for Chronic Low Back Pain: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials2013 •
Chronic low back pain (cLBP) is common and has a tremendous economic impact. With the prevalence and incidence of low back pain (LBP) on the rise, individuals often seek alternative treatments. Yoga is a widely used complementary and alternative medicine treatment for LBP. However, its efficacy as an intervention for LBP has not been thoroughly investigated. Therefore the purpose of this study was to systematically review the current literature for randomized controlled trials that assess the outcomes of Yoga as an intervention for individuals with cLBP. An electronic database search was performed for studies related to the efficacy of yoga in treatment for cLBP. Studies included were randomized control trials, published in English, from a peer-reviewed journal that identified yoga as the primary treatment focus for LBP in at least one group and included participants with at least a 12-week (3-month) history of symptoms. Our search revealed 185 articles. Of these, 10 met the inclusi...
