The present research had the purpose to analyze how students perceived a physical activity (PA) course in higher education that used the Sport Education (SE) model. The study addressed: i) Students overall enjoyment; ii) Students’ skill acquisition self-perception; iii) Students’ game rules knowledge self-perception; iv) Students’ instructional preference. Twenty-six students from an American university located in the Southern region attended this course. The Futsal (indoor-soccer) course offered two 75 minutes class per week. Two forms of data collection were used: a five-point Likert-type scale survey and a post-course interview. Students reported to have a very high enjoyment in all six major features of the SE model. In addition, statistical significance was reached when students reported their perceived skill acquisition and game rules knowledge acquisition. Students also reported to prefer SE when comparing to other physical activity courses that used a traditional pedagogy.
The promotion of regular exercise and the adoption of lifelong activity habits is undoubtedly one of the primary goals of school Physical Education (PE). To this direction, game-based PE teaching approaches are utilized by practitioners as a means for both launching students' in-class Physical Activity (PA) levels and promoting wider-base curriculum learning outcomes. As an approach of this kind, the Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) model is widely used as a game-based approach aiming at developing students' tactical skills and knowledge. Up to nowadays, only a limited amount of research has tested the impact of TGfU on students' PA levels during PE instruction time. Therefore, the aim of the present research was to evaluate the effects of a TGfU intervention program on primary school students' patterns of PA. Sixteen third and fourth grade students (mean age=9.2 years, SD 0.7) from two public schools in Athens, Greece, participated in a TGfU intervention program, that took place during their regularly planned PE classes. Students' PA levels were assessed at baseline and six-weeks follow-up, within a 10-minute four vs four handball game. PA measures were obtained both quantitatively by using pedometers (steps per minute) and qualitatively through direct observation with the System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time (SOFIT). The comparison of students' pre-and-post measures showed that although students' movement intensity was higher at the end of the intervention, their PA behaviors did not differ significantly between the two time points. These findings were attributed both to the development of students' game skills and competence and the short duration of the evaluation period. Results suggest that Aspasia Dania, Irene Kossyva, Katerina Zounhia EFFECTS OF A TEACHING GAMES FOR UNDERSTANDING PROGRAM ON PRIMARY SCHOOL STUDENTS' PHYSICAL ACTIVITY PATTERNS European Journal of Physical Education and Sport Science-Volume 3 │ Issue 2 │ 2017 82 judgments about the health-related usefulness of the TGfU model should be based on multiple-source and long-duration assessment procedures.

The concept of Physical Literacy was reinvigorated twenty-five years ago by M. Whitehead and has since gained an ever broader ground in all continents. It essentially describes a human activity of great importance, the individuals' embodied ability to maintain their movement throughout the life course in order to enhance their quality of life. Because physical literacy was associated with various aspects of an individual's life and with all ages, numerous groups around the world adopted its objectives and principles, specific policies were developed and programmes were implemented for its promotion, while books were written and several scientific articles were published on the subject. The purpose of this study was to review the research literature to establish what is currently known about the extent to which Physical Literacy has been achieved in all countries. It specifically studies which countries implemented physical literacy programmes and promotion policies, what res...

OLD OR NEW: RETROSPECTIVE APPRAISAL AND WORK EXPERIENCES OF MUSIC, ARTS, AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIVERSITY GRADUATES2021 •
The study intended to look back the experiences of the last batch of the university graduates taking Music, Arts and Physical Education as the area of specialization in Education in one of the Higher Education Institutions in Cebu, Philippines. Specifically, the study elaborated on the graduates’ personal and professional characteristics, retrospective evaluation, perceived levels of self-efficacy and lived experiences of the graduates on how the program aided them in their teaching profession. Concurrent mixed method was utilized in the study: (1) descriptive retrospective survey using a questionnaire (quantitative) and (2) narrative inquiry design (qualitative) using semi-structured interview with the nine graduates as the key informants of the study. All nine graduates are employed, with seven of them teaching in their field. Graduates’ retrospective evaluation of their university experience revealed that their practicum experience was the most relevant which provided them the edge and opportunity to taste the reality of teaching. The strength of the program is identified in dance and sports while the teaching of health, music and arts-related courses were regarded weak. Graduates perceived level of self – efficacy was high as indicated by their ability to develop initiatives towards professional growth, and to work with people of different backgrounds. Further, three (3) emerging themes revealed as the self-instilled work values of the graduates such as persistence, love of work and open-mindedness that assisted them to be able to sustain and survive in their teaching career. This study concluded that Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPE) is still relevant even with the existence of the new mandated Physical Education curricular program to the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes and competencies of the MAPE graduates vis-à-vis to the demand and need of the labor market and of what is expected from them in this changing time.

POSITIVE RELATIONS OF PHYSICAL FITNESS AND EXERCISE INTERVENTION PROGRAMS WITH MOTOR COMPETENCE AND HEALTH-RELATED QUALITY OF LIFE IN DEVELOPMENTAL COORDINATION DISORDER: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW2020 •
Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD) is an impairment in the development of motor coordination creating varied problems and difficulties in children's and adolescent's daily life activities. As a result, the avoidance of participating in physical activity leads in low levels of fitness and also in secondary social and emotional problems. Fitness levels in children and adolescents with DCD have been recognized as an important factor which influences their performance in daily activities and has a positive impact on their health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Surveys showed that every domain in HRQOL (motor, cognitive, emotional, social) is significantly lower in children with DCD compared to their peers. These data showed that intervention is very important for improving motor skill performance and HRQOL, too, in children and adolescents with DCD. The present study aimed to systematically review the literature published in peer reviewed journals and to summarize information about possible relationships between intervention approaches focused on physical fitness and exercise, participation in physical activity and HRQOL, in children and adolescents with DCD. Studies which examined the effect of fitness and exercise intervention programs on motor competence and HRQOL in children and adolescents with DCD were also, included. The review of the literature has shown that several intervention programs developed for DCD population, focusing to improve motor ability, derived from occupational therapy, physiotherapy, medicine, dietetics and education scientific areas. Generally, the present review focused on two basic approaches in clinical practice regarding intervention programs for DCD individuals: task-oriented and process-oriented approach. The task-oriented approach aims to improve the performance of a specific skill and on the other hand the process-oriented approach aims to identify the underlying processes or dysfunctions which the individual has not developed adequately according to his/her age, although they are considered to be necessary for successful performance and acquisition of motor skills. Children and adolescents with DCD seemed to report poorer ΗRQOL than their typically developing peers. However, HRQOL in children and adolescents with DCD needs further investigation. In addition, there is a need of research in interventions focused on fitness and exercise programs with an ultimate goal to improve motor ability and HRQOL too; through participation in such interventions children and adolescents with DCD, may be possible to break the negative cycle of physical activity avoidance, reversing it to a positive one. It is concluded that, there are possible positive relationships between fitness and exercise intervention programs, motor competence and HRQOL in children and adolescents with DCD. Future research should focus on examining whether and how such interventions may eliminate functional constraints leading to an engagement in the positive cycle of physical activity, with a further improvement in HRQOL in DCD population.
