One of the four main skills of language, reading is a concept encountered by individuals both in the process of education and social life. Individuals reading and having positive motivation towards reading constitute successful societies. The purpose of this study is to determine the correlation of reading motivation & reading engagement with reading comprehension skills in 8th grade students. The sample of the study consisted of 183 students studying at 8th grade of secondary school during the school year of 2016-2017. The data were collected by using “reading motivation and engagement scale” developed by Guthrie and Klauda (2014) and adapted into Turkish by Yıldız and Aktaş (2015) as well as “test of reading comprehension” developed by the researcher. According to the data obtained, a significant difference was found in terms of the variables of gender and age. Additionally, while positive significant correlations were found among the subscales of reading motivation and engagement scale, reading motivation& reading engagement had a negative correlation with reading comprehension. According to the regression analysis, none of the variables predicted each other.

The Correlation between Students’ Reading Motivation and Reading Comprehension at Eighth Grade Students LevelThe purposes of this research were to find out: (1) there was a correlation between students’ reading motivation and reading comprehension of students at eighth grade level in Palembang, (2) How much motivation contributed to reading comprehension of students at eighth grade level in Palembang. The population of this research was three private schools in Palembang (SMP Islam Az-Zahrah 1 Palembang, SMP IT Harapan Mulia Palembang, and SMP Tarbiyah Palembang) which consisted of two hundred ten students. And then, one hundred ten students were selected as the sample using the convenience sampling technique. The data were collected by using MRQ questionnaire by Wang and Guthrie (2004) and a reading comprehension test. Pearson Product Moment and regression analysis were used to determine the correlation and the contribution between the two variables. The result showed a correlation between reading motivation and reading comprehension with r (.257). Besides, there was also the contribution...

Abstract: The objective of this study was to find out reading literacy performance and reading engagement of tenth graders of three public schools in two districts in Palembang based on school location and socioeconomic status (SES). The sample of this study consisted of 254 tenth grade students selected purposively from three public senior high schools in Kemuning and Plaju districts. PISA 2009 Reading Literacy test in English and two questionnaires (reading engagement and SES questionnaires) were used to collect the data, which were analyzed statistically. The finding of this study showed that the students’ PISA reading literacy score in English was 23.39 and it was below the Indonesian Standard of National Education (KKM). It was also at level 3 based on PISA level. In terms of school location, students’ PISA reading literacy score showed significant difference, while in relation to father occupational status which was one of the SES aspects showed that the PISA read...

Reading comprehension is an activity to find meaning or message from the writer through the text they read. This research seeks to know the relationship between reading interest and reading comprehension. There were 38 students are engaged in this study as respondents who selected by using simple random sampling technique. The respondents are the students who have been doing reading class in second semester. Regression statistical technique and correlation are used to analyze the data. The result shows that there is a positive correlation between reading interest and reading comprehension. The level of their reading comprehension is determined by high or low of their reading interest. Based on the findings, reading interest that categorized as “very high” is found in creative reading comprehension group. This finding shows that the more students do reading, the easier they comprehend the meaning of what they read, both explicitly and implicitly. The result of the research can be one...

Reading Engagement Opportunities Of Education StudentsReading is life. If 80% of man's activity involves reading, (Villamin 1994) then students be made conscious on what type and how the reading materials be chosen for personal and academic purpose. This study which utilized the descriptive-normative survey method aimed to find out the reading preferences and their effects to reading performance of the first year students in both Bachelor of Secondary and Bachelor of Elementary Education programs of Cebu Normal University. These were treated using the simple percentage and ranking with the Minitab software. Using the ranking, findings revealed that most of the students in the Bachelor in Elementary Education highly preferred the dictionary. This is followed by the newspapers, magazines, short stories, etc. On the other hand, the students in the Bachelor in Secondary Education students highly preferred the encyclopedia. This is followed by the magazines, short stories, textbooks, etc. Moreover, it is noted that there is no relationship between the students' reading preferences and their performance in reading. It means that their reading preferences do not have bearing nor effect on their reading performance. It is therefore concluded that reading is a personal responsibility. It is a matter of how one comprehends, analyzes, applies and creates new ideas from the written texts regardless of their preferences that leads them to develop critical thinking needed for them to function effectively in the society.
The article focuses on the value of reading and the enjoyment of this activity by students of lower secondary schools. The subject of the analysis is the relationship of different factors on attitudes towards reading: gender and the social status of students' families. The aim of the analysis is to learn if reading books and engagement in reading could overcome the negative influence of low social and cultural capital and gender on reading performance and educational outcomes. The study is based on the results of three editions of the national study on reading habits and attitudes among students of lower secondary schools conducted in

Exploring Heterogeneity in the Relationship between Reading Engagement and Reading Comprehension by Achievement Level2019 •
The present study examined potential synergistic relationships between reading engagement and reading comprehension among 3,689 third and fourth graders across 59 schools in North Carolina. Using hierarchical regression analyses, we replicated previous findings that reading engage- ment explains unique variance in reading comprehension. Our results indi- cated that reading engagement explained an additional 4% of variance in end-of-year reading comprehension above and beyond initial skill, student demographics, and school membership. We then utilized multilevel model- ing to examine the tenability of two common hypotheses in the literature: that reading engagement is more strongly related to the reading compre- hension of below-average readers (the compensatory hypothesis) and that reading engagement is more strongly related to the reading comprehen- sion of above-average or competent readers (the cognitive-constraint hypothesis). Students were broken into above-average, average, and below-average skill groups based on their beginning-of-year score on a nationally normed assessment of reading comprehension. Results sup- ported the cognitive-constraint hypothesis that the relationship between reading engagement and reading comprehension is attenuated for below- average readers. The strength of the relationship for average and above- average readers did not significantly differ, suggesting homogeneity in the strength of the relationship among these students.

Contribution of Reading Habit, Reading Interest, Reading Motivation, Reading Self-Efficacy to the Students’ Reading Comprehension in Senior High SchoolThe general objective pursued in this research is to describe and predict the students’ reading habit, reading interest, reading motivation, and reading self-efficacy to their reading competency in the Senior High School. The design applied is a quantitative research. There were 124 students recruited using cluster sampling technique. Data were gathered using four rating scales and a reading test. The obtained data were analyzed in two phases, namely: descriptively and inferentially. Descriptively, central tendency measures and dispersion were computed for the four predictor variables and one criterion variable. Whereas inferentially, gross and net contributions of the four predictor variables to the criterion variables were computed using regression analysis technique. Descriptively, the mean scores of reading habit, reading interest, reading motivation, reading self-efficacy, and reading comprehension are categorically moderate. The multiple correlation between the predictor vari...

This research was conducted to measure whether there is a correlation between learning motivation and reading comprehension achievement. The population of this research is the first-grade students of SMAN 8 Bekasi that consists of 99 students and was divided into three classes. The total samples are 40 students taken from the entire population by simple random sampling. The method was used in this research is a survey. It means quantitative analysis by using a questionnaire to a lot of objects. In his study, the writer gave questionnaires that consist of forty questions to know their learning motivation. And then, the writer gave multiple-choice tests to know reading comprehension achievement. The result of the calculation of correlation coefficient Phi with 5% level of significant from the degree of freedom (df) = N is 3, 841 and the interpretation of the score 2 count and 2 table indicated that 2 count (32, 727) > 2 table (3,841). Based on the result above, the null hypoth...
