The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of drug use on student interest in learning and identify counselling interventions that can be used when dealing with drug use among secondary school students in Matinyani district. Descriptive survey was used in this study. Fourteen public secondary schools were involved with population of 1701 students. Purposive sampling was used in the sample selection to select 5 schools which included a girls’ boarding, a boys’ boarding school, a mixed day school, a mixed boarding school and a mixed day and a boarding school. A sample size of 269 was used. The data was collected by use of a Core Alcohol and Drug Survey Questionnaire. Validity and reliability of the study instrument was established through a pilot study. A correlation coefficient alpha of 0.7408 was obtained. According to, Fraenkel and Wallen (2002) a reliability co efficient of 0.7 or more implies high degree of reliability. Data was analysed by use of descriptive statistics with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The descriptive analysis, percentages, tables, bar graphs and charts were used in presenting and summarizing the findings. In view of this, the field survey method was adopted to collect quantitative and qualitative data, using questionnaires and interviews. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in data analysis, thus there was a mixed model research design approach to data analysis. The analysis of structured items was mainly done using the Microsoft Office Excel 2007. The key findings from the study were that drug abuse among pupils is common; both boys and girls have abused drugs with the majority being in day schools; the highest of drug abusers among the sampled schools are aged between 16 and 18 years; there is a significant relationship between drug abuse and age, use of drugs by other family members and easy access to drugs. The study used the mixed method research design which combines qualitative and quantitative approaches in one study to answer research questions. The study population for this research comprised 48 secondary school teachers, 3 school heads and 150 students. Random sampling was employed to select the sample for classes within each form. Simple random sampling was used to select 8 senior school prefects for focus group discussions. School heads were selected for the study through purposive sampling for interviews. The study is on the Dangers of substance abuse on the academic performance of secondary school students in Kano municipality: implication for counseling. The study was a survey research design. A sample of 200 students was randomly selected from 10 secondary schools. A validated instrument named Drug Habit Inventory (DHI, Fayombo, 1998) with test reliability of 0.73 using chronbach alpha was used to collect the relevant data. The data collected were analyzed using t-test descriptive statistic. The findings show a significant difference between behavior of students' drug abusers and non-drug abusers and also there was no significant difference between academic performance of drug abusers and non-drug abusers. Based on the findings, the NERDC should design and make mandatory drug abuse curriculum for secondary schools and the government should establish counseling centres for drug control.

The study sought to determine whether significant differences existed between levels on prevalence of drug and substance abuse in schools where principals supported peer education versus those who did not support peer education. The study utilized the descriptive survey design and the target population of students was 30745.Out of 30745, 420 students formed sample size for the study from 35 schools, 35 principals, 5 education officers for focus group discussion and 35 guidance and counselling teachers totaling to 495 respondents. Instruments used were questionnaires for students and guidance and counselling teachers, interview guide for principals and focus group discussion. The computer program on statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) was used in the analysis. Levene's t. test for equality of variances and means was used for independent and dependent samples to get the significance on prevalence of drug and substance abuse. The study established that schools which had peer education have a significant difference on the prevalence of drug and substance abuse hence have higher levels on prevalence of drug and substance abuse compared to those which do not have peer education. In conclusion, the study concludes that there are significant differences on prevalence of drug and substance abuse in schools which use peer education compared to those schools which do not have peer education and hence have higher cases reported on drug and substance abuse. The study recommends that peer education should be carried out in public secondary schools. The study should also strive to get support from communities and parents in the areas where schools are located. The Ministry of Education Science and Technology should include drug and substance education in the curriculum implementation.
