In order to evaluate prospective teachers’ attitudes towards teaching profession, 5-point Likert-type attitude scale (Cronbach alpha value α=0.95) developed by Çetin in 2006 was used. The qualitative data in the study was collected using four open ended questions. For the analysis of the data, t-test and descriptive analysis methods were used. A significant difference occurred in favor of female prospective teachers in relation to the gender factor. No significant difference between attitude scores was observed in relation to the effects of class and socio-economic level. For such state, according to the largest number of respondents, are responsible in the first place, educational authorities, and then bad and outdated programs. Furthermore, most of the respondents of both genders are of the attitude that only a small number of teachers and professors conscientiously perform their job. However, more than a half of all the respondents believe that teachers are NOT adequately paid for their work. Also 1/2 of all respondents represent the attitude that the situation in schools today is caused due to fewer rights of teachers and professors and larger with children and their parents-what challenges the same number of respondents. The largest number of respondents believes that out of the proposed measures for correcting the poor condition in the schools (discipline, poor success...) is in socially-useful work of students, and in the last place, the denial of rights that they have. Teachers’ Attitude as a Correlate of Students’ Academic Performance2019 •
- The classroom climate which is often times set by the teacher is determined by the teacher’s attitude. Attitude as a major determinant of a person’s behavior influences the way a teacher relates with the students and thus affects students’ academic performance. The study examined teacher’s attitude as a correlate of students’ academic performance in geography. Descriptive survey design was adopted and a sample size of four hundred selected from a population of nine hundred and sixtyeight using the Taro Yamane sample size formula. Two research questions and a research hypothesis were proposed in line with the study objectives. Average Mean Score was used to analyze responses for the research questions while Multiple Regression Analysis was used to test the research hypotheses. The findings show that attitude of teachers correlated positively and significantly with students’ academic performance. Poor government attitude to teachers, lack of job satisfaction, poor remuneration and delayed salary, students’ learning interest and absence of teaching materials/instructional aid were found to influence the attitude of teachers. The paper strongly recommends among others thatsalaries and remuneration of teachers should be paid as at when due; teachers should go beyond Instruction and focus on the interpersonal aspects of teaching; constant in-service training should be provided for teachers and also provision should be made for teachers to attend educational conferences both locally and internationally as this would help them grow on the job.
This study examined the attitudes of teacher candidates in Turkey towards the teaching profession. Descriptive surveys were used and the research data was obtained from Pamukkale University Classroom Teaching students. During data analysis, the arithmetic means and standard deviations of the groups were calculated and a t-test and One-Way ANOVA were used. The attitudes of teacher candidates towards the teaching profession don’t vary in terms of “gender”, “type of teaching”, “type of high schools they graduate from” and in order of their preferences to be a teacher. More than half of the candidates choose the Classroom Teaching Program willingly and about all of them want to perform this profession, but their attitudes towards the teaching profession were not well developed. The majority of the participants were not satisfied with the University and faculty administrations and reopted that they don’t show enough effort required to develop themselves for the profession. It is found that the attitudes of students expressing their discontent are at a lower level. It is necessary to provide the teacher candidates not only with knowledge and skills, but also to help them develop the beliefs and positive attitudes related to the profession.
