Solving mathematical word problems is a difficult, complex and intellectual activity. The formation of problem solving skills is much more difficult than calculation skills because the problems are related to many concepts and a lot of mathematical relationships. Therefore, students are inevitable to commit errors to deal with them. This study shows the errors of 160 3rd grade students regarding some kinds of word problems in Mathematics 3 in Vietnam. The results indicate that children commit many errors due to many different reasons such as: subjectivity, carelessness, wrong application of the calculation rules, incorrect identification of problem kinds and wrong calculation.

The relationship between different kinds of students' errors and the knowledge required to solve mathematics word problems2012 •
The main objective of this research is to examine the relationship between different kinds of errors and the knowledge required to solve word problems in Arithmetic, Algebra and Geometry. Kinfong's and Holtan's framework supports the analysis of the errors, and Mayer's theory was implemented to understand the necessary knowledge for solving math word problems. The research methodology follows a semi-experimental method. Research tools comprise both a descriptive math test and a directed interview. The research findings revealed that students' errors when solving arithmetic word problems result from the lack of linguistic, semantic, structural and communicational knowledge; when solving the geometric word problems, the lack of semantic, intuition and structural knowledge were the cause of the students' errors. Regarding algebra word problems, miscalculation was the reason for the higher error rate. Results show that the highest deficiency is mainly related to the ...
This study aims to understand better student errors in solving mathematics word problems. A Word problem is a problem that has a story or arrangement based on sentences. The qualitative research approach was used. The data were collected by giving tests and interviewing two male high achievers senior high school students in mathematics. The student error analysis adopted the Newman error analysis system. The source triangulation was used to ensure the data validity. Based on the collecting data and data analysis, the decoding/reading error happened caused by students' common understanding or unfamiliarity of the mathematical terms used in the problem. The subjects showed inconsistency in interpreting problem sentences and misused mathematical symbols. Furthermore, the subject encountered difficulties with the arithmetic process, especially fractions and their operation. This research identified students' difficulties in solving problem mathematics word problems. Moreover, th...

Error Analysis in Solving Word Problems among Grade-8 StudentsDespite the importance of problem-solving skills in preparing students for the workforce and the emphasis on problem-solving in mathematics education, studies have shown that many students struggle with mathematics problem-solving. In the Philippines, low proficiency in mathematics and a high prevalence of errors in problem-solving have been observed, emphasizing the need for further improvement in students’ problem-solving abilities. This research investigated the errors made by eighth-grade students of Talalora National High School in solving word problems and examined their impact on reading comprehension and analytical skills. A quantitative correlational design was employed, and standardized tests were used as data-gathering instruments. The analysis involved statistical measures such as frequency counts, percentages, mean, and standard deviation, as well as inferential statistical methods, including chi-squared for dependence, to establish correlations. The results showed that...

Mathematical Representations: A Study in Solving Mathematical Word Problems at Grade 5 - Vietnam2019 •
The paper aims to: (1) present the types of representations in solving mathematical problems;(2) to find out the types of representation used in solving word problems in textbook “Toan 5” (Mathematics 5) of Vietnam; and (3) report the results of a survey on using representations of Grade 5 students in solving non-routine mathematical problems. The study results revealed that the students faced many difficulties and had errors sin using visual and symbolic representation.

Analysis of students’ verbal and written mathematical communication error in solving word problem2020 •
Communication is an important ability for every human being to have. In this research, the focus of communication is on students’ mathematical communication skills. Mathematical communication is divided into two parts, namely written communication and verbal communication. If students have good verbal and written mathematical communication skills, then they are easier to express ideas and strategies and are able to write the stages of problem solving well, especially word problem. This is because word problem requires special attention in their solution. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze mathematical communication errors experienced by students in solving mathematical word problem. This study aims to describe the students’ written and oral mathematical communication skills in solving word problem. This type of research is qualitative-descriptive. The research subjects were three junior high school students. Based on the results of the study, there were still students who could n...
