The study sought to find out the factors affecting academic performance of orphaned children in Bindura District primary schools in Zimbabwe. The descriptive survey design was used in this study. The population was 300 teachers and 50 orphaned children. A sample of 80 teachers and 10 children randomly selected participated in this research study. Data were collected using questionnaires and interviews. The SPSS programme was used to analyse the data. The study found out that orphaned children did not perform well academically during class work. They did not do homework assigned by the teachers. The study found out that teachers did not have knowledge or skills to assist orphaned children during teaching and learning. The study recommended that teachers should be equipped with skills to manage orphaned children academically. The study recommended that foster parents need to be made aware through workshops how to assist orphaned children with class work assigned to be done at home. More research should be done on how orphaned children can be motivated to learn.

Factors Influencing Academic Performance of Primary School’s Orphans in Tanzania2020 •
The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of Orphan-hood in the Academic Performance of Learners (with special reference to junior secondary school students in Gaborone). A semi structured questionnaire was administered to form 2 students who are orphans. The results reveal that orphan-hood directly impacts the academic performance of learners mainly because of the psycho-social effects. Several challenges stemming from the loss of parents were identified as being instrumental in affecting the academic performance of orphans. The study also determined many programmes available for orphans at schools that help them cope and integrate them back into a stable psycho-social state. However, the greatest challenge is that these programmes are not targeting all orphans and as a result a few excluded orphans still have misconceptions concerning their status and thus this has an effect on their academic performance.
Orphan hood is a depressing status in life and has adverse effects yet every child in Kenya has a right to quality education that should lead to good learning in pursuance to Universal Primary Education (UPE). Majority of orphaned learners are widely affected and fail to attain good performance. However exceptional few perform well and attain high grades enabling them to join good High schools and pursue their academic dreams. The study therefore assessed the types of family set up that host orphaned learners and the coping strategies they device in the new set up. Descriptive survey design was used to collect data from 13 public primary schools with a sample constituting of head teachers, teachers, and orphaned learners. Random sampling technique was used to select the schools; purposive sampling technique choice head teachers and orphaned learners, and random sampling selected teachers. A questionnaire, interview schedule, and document analysis collected the qualitative and quantitative data. Descriptive statistics analyzed the quantitative data and findings were presented in the frequency/mean tables and graphs while qualitative data was presented thematically. The study established that a good number of orphaned learners in Kenya lived with older siblings and received a lot of motivation and encouragement from the sibling that led to their achievement. The second highest number of orphaned learners lived with grandparents who were economically unable to manage the responsibility. The study concluded that majority of orphaned learners lacked guidance from adults and therefore recommended that grandparents who took care of the orphans but not fully financially assisted by the government should be supported, and the Ministry of Health in collaboration with other good will stake holders to launch health and nutrition program in schools where none exists. The findings of the study are important to the government, educational planners, stakeholders, parents and the community.

Orphanhood is a depressing status in life time that one would wish never to occur in any family set up due to its adverse effects. Despite the vulnerable status of the orphaned learners, every child in Kenya has a right to quality education that should lead to good performance and achievement of Universal Primary Education (UPE). Due to their vulnerability, majority of orphaned learners are widely affected and unable to attain good performance. However there are exceptional cases where some orphaned learners perform well and attain high marks which enable them to join good secondary schools and pursue their education very well. The study therefore assessed coping strategies by such exceptional orphaned learners and their academic achievement in Winam Division in Kisumu County. Descriptive survey design was used in the study. The study population consisted of 43 head teachers, 516 teachers and 3042 orphaned learners in 43 mixed public primary schools. Random sampling technique was us...
Educational achievement has important implications for the health and well-being of young women in sub-Saharan Africa. We assessed the effects of providing school support on educational outcomes of orphan girls in rural Zimbabwe. Data were from a randomized controlled trial offering the intervention group comprehensive schooling support and controls no treatment initially and then fees only. Results indicated comprehensive support reduced school dropout and absence but did not improve test scores. Providing support to orphan girls is promising for addressing World Health Organization Millennium Development Goals, but further research is needed about contextual factors affecting girls' school participation and learning.

Analysis of Psychosocial Support Needs for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Primary Education: A Case Study of Public Schools in Harare, Zimbabwe2022 •
This study analysed the psychosocial support needs for orphans and vulnerable children in primary education. The particular focus was on public primary schools in Epworth, Mabvuku and Tafara. these schools were located in Harare of Zimbabwe.the analysis of this qualitative research study was based on the perspectives of 10 school heads, 10 teachers, 5 school counselors, and 80 orphans and vulnerable children, making a sample of 105 participants. These participants were drawn from 10 public primary schools in the areas mentioned above. A purposive sampling technique was used to select the participants. The study used interviews and focus group discussions to collect data. The data that were collected were analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results revealed that while OVC in the research setting received some form of assistance from either government or NGOs, the assistance packages provided were not adequate to address the basic needs required to sustain the concerned children. The most pronounced insufficiencies were in the areas of educational, food and counseling support. The study recommended that the government and NGOs should coordinate and synchronise to ensure that the assistance provided to OVC in public primary schools in Epworth, Mabvuku and Tafara, addresses their basic needs.

In Tanzania, safeguarding the rights of vulnerable people is an important policy issue, particularly in respect to poverty reduction as underscored in the national strategy for growth and reduction of poverty (NSGRP), also known in kiswahili as mkakati wa kukuza uchumi na kupunguza umasikini (MKUKUTA). mkukuta highlights the importance of the provision of adequate social service and protection of rights of vulnerable and needy groups in the fight against poverty (URT, 2005A). For example, the CCBRT (comprehensive community based rehabilitation Tanzania) program aims at improving the quality of life of poor orphan children in Tanzania. Among the strategies adopted by is that of home based care of orphans instead of isolation. the approach is to assist those children whose parent(s) have died from HIV/AIDS and poor families who are not able to finance education for their orphans. the main objective of this program is to provide community based integrated orphan care. The program has categorized group of orphans into two. These include those whose parents died of HIV/AIDS and those whose families are not financially able to send them to school, especially primary school. sCurrently, the program has supported 1500 orphans in the country, but the main area of attention is in Dar es salaam and Kilimanjaro region. Among 1500 orphans given support for education, 1436 are primary school pupils, 60 are secondary school students and 4 are university students. The critical review from various studies show that there is much support offered by different NGOS, education centers and even by the government itself through free education to orphaned students in primary schools only. Surprisingly enough education support provided to orphaned students is not sustainable to secondary schools- it is for government intention of increasing enrollment of students in primary schools. This is a big challenge in education sector! Unfortunately enough, the schools particularly in primary schools by enhancing students enrollment. Unfortunately enough, no efforts have been established to ensure that they reach secondary schools and how well they acquire formal education.
