This study investigates the predictive power of existential anxieties (death, meaninglessness, isolation, and freedom) on life satisfaction and self-esteem. The study was designed within the framework of a relational screening model. The study group of the research was comprised of a total of 418 sophomore and junior students studying in various undergraduate programs of Ankara University, Faculty of Educational Sciences in the 2015-2016 spring term. The Existential Anxiety Scale, Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale, and Satisfaction with Life Scale were utilized for the study in order to assess undergraduate students’ existential anxieties. The t-test for the independent samples and multiple regression analysis were used in the analyses of data collected within the scope of the study. Stepwise multiple linear regression analysis technique was utilized to ascertain the best predictors for the self-esteem and life satisfaction variables in the study. The results of the study revealed no statistically significant differences between female and male students pertaining to the meaninglessness, isolation, death anxiety, and freedom sub-dimensions of the existential anxiety scale and the total score obtained from the scale. It was observed that the meaninglessness, isolation, and freedom variables were significant predictors with regards to their contribution to the self-esteem variance. It was also seen that the isolation and meaninglessness variables were significant predictors regarding their contribution to the life satisfaction variance. The data collected were discussed within the framework of related literature.

The Existential Concerns Questionnaire (ECQ)-Development and Initial Validation of a New Existential Anxiety Scale in a Nonclinical and Clinical Sample2017 •
Objective: Existential anxiety (EA) is a construct that refers to fears that are provoked by core threats of human existence, such as death, meaninglessness, and fundamental loneliness. The objective of this study was to develop an EA measure that can be used in research and clinical practice. Method: The Existential Concerns Questionnaire (ECQ) was completed by a nonclinical sample of 389 adults, together with questionnaires measuring death anxiety, intolerance of uncertainty, neuroti-cism, distress, meaning, and life events. Adaptations were made based on item analysis and factor analysis. A total of 99 adults who had an anxiety and/or depressive disorder completed the final version. Results: The ECQ was demonstrated to be essentially unidimensional and showed good reliability and stability. Correlations with other measures were within the expected range of strength, except for a weak association with life events. Conclusion: Initial results regarding the psychometric properties of the ECQ are promising. C

Logotherapy is a meaning-centered p.ychotherapy which focuses on both the meaning of iiuman existence and the personal search for meaning. If the w_11 to search for meaning is frustrated, "existential frustration" may result. This study validates the Existential Anxiety Scale (EAS) developed by Good and Good (1974). Basic principles of logotherapy are discussed and related research is reviewed. The materials used in this study include the EAS, the Purpose in Life (PIL) test, the Seeking of Noetic Goals (SONG) test, the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and a demographic data sheet. The researcher chose multiple regression to test the significance of the combination of PIL, SONG, depression, drug use, and other demographic variable on high existential anxiety. It was hypothc ized that high existential anxiety correlates with low PIL scores, high SONG scores, high depression, drug use, high sexual activity, fewer close friends, and lack of involvement in spiritual or religious activities. Results substantiated the hypothesis that high existential anxiety is significantly related to low PIL scores, high SONG scores, and high depression. No other hypotheses were substantiated. Objective: This study aimed at investigating the mediating role of perceived stress in anticipation of anxiety and depression on facing the ultimate concerns (death, loneliness, freedom, and meaningfulness). Method : A total of 389 students from Ferdowsi University of Mashhad participated in this study in 2017-18. The participants were selected using random sampling. The data were collected using the subscales of anxiety and depression in depression, anxiety, stress scale (DASS), Death Anxiety Scale (DAS), the third edition of Loneliness Scale UCLA (UCLA-LS), the subscale of meaning in life in Meaningfulness of Life Questionnaire (MLQ), responsibility scale of California Psychological Inventory (CPI), and the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). Then, they were evaluated using Pearson correlation and path analysis. Results: The correlation between the symptoms of anxiety and depression, and death anxiety and loneliness was direct and significant with the perceived stress. The relationship ...

This study intended to examine the relationship between existential crisis, life expectancy and identity amongst students of Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran, Iran, using a descriptive-correlative research method. Study participants were classified into two groups of male and female undergraduate students. There were 200 subjects, 80 males and 120 females, selected by random-assignment sampling. We used the following questionnaires to identify the correlation between variables: Domain Specific Hope Scale, Identity Style Inventory Revised for a Sixth-Grade Reading Level (ISI-6G) and Existential Crisis Scale. For data analysis, we used the Pearson correlation test, independent t-test and multiple regression analysis for the total group and according to gender. Pearson correlation test results showed significant correlation between existential crisis and life expectancy as well as between identity styles (committal and informative) and life expectancy. There was no correlation between existential crisis and identity styles (informative and hesitant). Multiple regression results showed that existential crisis predicted the following variances: life expectancy (0.33), informative identity (0.11), commitment identity (0.58) and diffusion identity (0.3). Study limitations included the inclusion of only undergraduate students; therefore the results could not be generalized to all university students. By taking into consideration that the existential crisis prevalence among youth is unclear, we recommend additional research in this field.

Life Satisfaction, and Anxiety Levels among University Students206 adolescents, aged between 16 and 18, from four high schools in Brasov, distributed in a balanced way after the gender criterion, were investigated with a battery of instruments destined to determine the factors implied in the global level of life satisfaction. Besides the questionnaire of demographic data, there were used the questionnaire of Existential Topics, indicative for global level of life satisfaction, Burns questionnaires for anxiety and depression, Dean questionnaire of Social Support and three questionnaires of self-esteem, on its dimensions: physical (Clinciu Body Self-perception), psychical (Clinciu Self-perception) and social (Social Self-Esteem Inventory of Lawson, Marshall, and McGrath). The study hypothesis anticipates a significant direct link between the level of self-esteem and the level of life satisfaction and an indirect one between life satisfaction and negative emotionality (anxiety and depression). In addition, we anticipate that negative emotionality ...

This particular study “Determinants of Existential Crisis among Young Adults” was conducted to find out the factors that influences one to go through an existential crisis in this modern era, to understand what kind of behaviors are shown by individual having an existential crisis and to seek for the possible coping strategies. This research study has been conducted by interviewing individuals of age group 18 to 30, and total 7 respondents were selected from the Kathmandu district through purposive sampling. This study is solely based on the analysis of data that has been collected through the interview of the participants who went through existential crisis. The study follows the exploratory research design, where it tends to explore the determinants of an existential crisis among young adults. It tries to explore the major causes or factor that has been identified as the triggers and the possible coping strategies. The entire study is based on the philosophy of existentialism and cognitive behavior therapy. It involves the narrative analysis of the data collection. Keywords: Existential Crisis, Existentialism, Meaninglessness, hopelessness, pointlessness, Stress, Anxiety, Nihilism, Logotherapy, Young Adults
