In linguistics, a compound is a lexeme (less precisely, a word) that consists of more than one stem. Compounding or composition is the word-formation that creates compound lexemes (the other word-formation process being derivation). Compounding or Word-compounding refers to the faculty and device of language to form new words by combining or putting together old words. In other words, compound, compounding or word-compounding occurs when a person attaches two or more words together to make them one word. The meanings of the words interrelate in such a way that a new meaning comes out which is very different from the meanings of the words in isolation. The contrast of the words between English to Albanian: Bus driver in English compound words in Albanian simple word (shofer ose shofer i autobusit) or housekeeper – amëvise; schoolbook - libër shkolle; classroom – klasë; homework - detyrë shtëpia.
The compound words are all the words that are compound from two or more words and both of them creative the new words with the new meaning. Comparative Overview on Word-Compounding in English and Albanian2012 •
This paper presents a comparative bilingual overview, by comparing word formation in two languages, respectively Albanian and English, as well as the main word formation trends in both languages. Both languages display a variety of word formation techniques, but their classifications according to different ways are not in complete conformity with each other. An example of this is "pëngjitja"1, which in Albanian is classified as an independent class form the compound nouns, while in English it appears under the heading of "compounds". The paper will also highlight spelling and phonetic differences in both languages. In Albanian language the "përngjitja" is formed by the monomial of word group or phrase, a prepositional phrase or a group of words in general. The syntactic relations between the terms of the phrase or the group are usually preserved clearly, even in the structure of the newly formed word -të përngjitur. In English compounding, which also in...
This study aims to identify the main cross-linguistic criteria for compoundhood discussed in the relevant literature, with a special focus on English, ranking them from the most reliable to the least. These criteria-orthographic, phonological, syntactic and semantic in nature-have been proposed to make a distinction between compounds and phrases. The analysis reveals that the most reliable cross-linguistic criteria to distinguish between phrases and compounds are adjacency and referentiality. With regard to the former criterion, no intervening elements can be inserted between the head and the non-head of compounds, whilst such insertion is allowed in phrases. With regard to the latter criterion, the non-head of a phrase is always referential, whereas the non-head of a compound is normally non-referential. Other criteria have been found to be partially applicable, e.g. free pluralisation of the non-head, compositionality, stress, possibilities for modification and coordination, ellipsis, orthography and the replacement of the second element by a pro-form. The study also proposes a definition for compounds that may be the most widely applicable. Finally, the study concludes with ranking the main criteria for compoundhood discussed in the study.
