Both Primary and Secondary data were employed. The primary data were collected with well-structured questionnaire while the secondary data was gotten from the local government records.Benefit incidence analysis and Multinomial Regression model used were to determine whether the poor benefit from government expenditure on health and the factors that influence household behavior in seeking health care. The results showed that majority of the households were male-headed with average age of 40 years, married, educated and live below the poverty line. The most preferred place of seeking medical services was government hospital and the common ailment among the household was malaria. The mean expenditure of the households was N9,398. Years of education, presence of hygiene facilities and registration cost increased the likelihood of households' patronage of private clinics. Age of household head, family size, presence of hygiene facilities, communication access (GSM), drug and registration cost increased the likelihood of households patronage of chemist. Years of education of household head, registration cost and hygiene facilities increased the likelihood of household patronage of self-care. The result further showed that the average spending on health by households is N456.40 while the health subsidy accruing to household from government is N687.98. Comparative Assessment of Health Status and Health-Seeking Behaviour of Household Heads in Rural and Urban Areas of Abia State, Nigeria2024 •
Health status of a nation is closely linked to the health seeking behavior and its economic growth. Therefore, this study aims to examine the health status and health-seeking behaviour of household heads in urban and rural areas of Abia State, Nigeria using a mixed model approach. An analytical cross-sectional study design was employed where the quantitative data was collected using a structured questionnaire to compare the health status and health-seeking behaviour of urban (n=450) and rural household heads (n=447). For the qualitative arm of the study, data was collected through focus group discussions using an interview guide. The results show that a significantly higher percentage of rural household heads (10.3%) perceive their health status as 'very good' compared to their urban counterparts (4.2%), p-value <0.05. Additionally, urban household heads reported a higher incidence of illness (85.2% vs. 36.2%), where malaria (70.9% vs. 9.9%) and typhoid (34.3% vs. 4.3%)ranked highest. Regarding their health seeking behavior, urban household heads were first sought care from to private hospitals (n=102, 26.6%) followed by chemist shops (n=212, 55.2%), while their rural counterpart first sought treatment from primary health centres. To conclude, these findings suggest that although urban household heads have seemingly better health-seeking behaviour than the rural, the effect of urbanization has negatively affected their health status. Therefore, more concerted efforts should be geared at designing health promotion campaigns to improve the health status of the population whilst addressing barriers to seeking health care such as financial constraint and cost of transportation.

Perceptions and factors affecting utilization of health services in a rural community in Southern Nigeria2014 •
Good utilization of health services improves the health status of the population. However, the presence of health facilities alone is not enough to guarantee use as other socioeconomic factors could influence access and utilization. This study assessed the community perceptions and factors affecting the utilization of health services in a rural community in Southern Nigeria. A descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out in Anegbette, a rural community in Etsako Central Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo State, Nigeria in 2011. Data was obtained through a structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire administered to adult respondents in two selected settlements in Anegbette using cluster sampling method. Over three-quarters of respondents, 219 (76.8%) utilized the health facilities. There was no statistical significant association in the utilization of health services with regard to gender (p=0.889, OR=1.04; 0.55-2.00), educational level (p=0.707, OR=1.16; 0.50-2.79) and age (p=0.839, OR=0.94; 0.51-1.72). Community perceptions of poor quality and inadequacy of available services, however, determined largely the level of use of the primary health care facility. The utilization of the primary health facility was good, community perceptions of poor quality and inadequacy of available services were identified barriers to satisfactory use of primary health services. Identified barriers to access and effective use of qualitative health care services in rural communities should be tackled by the relevant Local Government and State health authority.
People especially women and children die everyday due to the poor standard of living and low level of utilization of health care facilities in most rural communities and as such, this study seeks to examine the influence of socio-economic status on healthcare facilities utilization and to ascertain the quality of healthcare facilities available in the rural communities. Theoretically, the study made use of Rational Choice Theory (RCT) and Health Belief Model. A descriptive research design was employed for the study, using both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. The quantitative data was computer processed and analyzed with statistical package for Social Science (SPSS v18.0). The outcome of the study indicates that Most of the respondents (95.8%) agreed that they had utilized health facility while 4.2% of the respondents had not utilized health facility.
Delivery of quality health services to all and sundry including persons living in our numerous communities in Nigeria is a prerequisite to improving national health indices. Strengthening the capacity of rural health practice centers to deliver health services to people in their domain is very vital in this regard. The peculiar characteristics of practicing health care in rural communities such as small defined geographical areas and the corresponding socio-cultural mileu can be harnessed to improve the health indices of rural communities. On the other hand, providing the necessary support to address manpower shortage and infrastructural deficit in these setting is a task that government and other stakeholders must undertake. This paper focuses on the peculiar nature of delivering health care services in rural settings and draws attention to how these peculiarities may be harnessed for the benefits of rural communities.
