AREAS OF USE OF MEDICINAL AND AROMATIC PLANTS: LITERATURE-SUPPORTED COMPILATION

Arif Aksoy

Abstract

Medicinal and aromatic plants are widely used as natural resources in various sectors such as medicine, cosmetics, food and agriculture. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 80% of the world's population relies on traditional and herbal practices for their primary health needs (WHO, 2013). Countries with rich biodiversity, such as Turkey, attribute significant economic and cultural value to these plants. Medicinal and aromatic plants containing various bioactive compounds play an important role in both traditional medicine and modern pharmacology. This study examines the wide range of uses of medicinal and aromatic plants and highlights their increasing importance in health-related industries. Emphasis is placed on their pharmacological properties, nutritional value, cosmetic applications, agricultural benefits and roles in aromatherapy. Furthermore, sustainable and scientifically based use is emphasized as a prerequisite to unlock their full potential. This study aims to provide general information about the areas of use of medicinal and aromatic plants by conducting a literature review.
