Abstract

The elderly population in Bangkok, Thailand, is growing into an aging society, with approximately 1.2 million having chronic health conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes. The food consumption behaviour modification and health exercise programs were created to prevent central obesity and its complications to 200 participants divided into two groups: The first group participated in behaviour modification and participated with the exercise programs for 6 months. The first group had a mean weight loss from 75.4 to 72.3 kg (p<.01), and BMI decreased from 29.5 to 27.7 kg/m² (p<.01), while the percentage of body fat decreased from 32.1% to 28.9% (p<.01). The second group had a mean weight loss from 76.1 to 74.0 kg (p < 0.05) and which their BMI decreased from 30.0 to 28.8 kg/m² (p<.05). In addition, the assessment of complications found that before joining the program, the number of elderly people with complications was 70%, which decreased to 40% in the diet modification group (p<.01), and indicates a decrease from 70% to 64% for the second group. Dietary modification programs are more effective in reducing central obesity and its complications. Suggestions the development of health programs combined with exercise to promote long-term health in elderly people.
