BEHAVIORAL CHANGE OVERSHOOTS IMPACT QUALITY OF LIFE IN SEDENTARY WOMEN

Abstract

Abstract:
This study aimed to examine the relationship between stages of behavioral change and quality of life among sedentary women. Statistical analyses were conducted using t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and Least Significant Difference (LSD) post hoc tests. While the mean age across behavioral change stages did not differ significantly, statistically significant differences were identified in participants' height, body weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI) (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001). Specifically, BMI values were significantly higher among individuals in the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages compared to those in the action and maintenance stages (p < 0.001). Quality of life scores were also significantly higher in participants who self-reported their health as “very good” or “good” compared to those with lower self-assessed health ratings (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001). Additionally, physical, psychological, social, and environmental health subscale scores were significantly lower among individuals in the pre-contemplation and contemplation stages compared to those in the action and maintenance stages (p < 0.001). Participants with a history of regular moderate physical activity reported significantly higher quality of life scores than those without such a history (p < 0.05 and p < 0.001). The findings indicate that quality of life among sedentary women varies significantly according to their stage in the behavioral change process. Women in the early stages of change—specifically those with no intention to engage in physical activity or only contemplating doing so—exhibited lower quality of life scores compared to those who regularly engage in and maintain physical activity. The results underscore the importance of promoting regular physical activity among sedentary women, particularly through structured interventions and support within community or fitness center settings, to enhance their overall quality of life.
