LA DONNA COME DEA: INFLUENZE CLASSICHE E INNOVAZIONE NELLA POESIA DI LAURA BATTIFERRA / THE WOMAN AS GODDESS: CLASSICAL INFLUENCES E INNOVATION IN LAURA BATTIFERRA'S POETRY

Anna Griva

Abstract

In this article the position of the women is examined through the poems of Primo libro delle opere toscane (1560) by Laura Battiferra. More specifically the object of this study is the role of female in the frame of the communication of human with the transcendental powers. The woman in the poems of Battiferra is an entity with divine properties, which reveals to the humans the secrets of an eternal and indestructible world, while both her view and the expressive options of the poet are greatly influenced by the echoes of the classical works. Special emphasis is given to the comparative study of the Sapphic fragments to the verses of the poet, which often meet each other in crucial issues and they denote a common worldview. The poetry of Battiferra can uncover the way the Renaissance world foregrounds the female, as creator of the social evolution, as well as a catalyst for the understanding of the cosmic mystery.
