PROFESSIONALISM, ORGANIZATIONAL SOCIALIZATION, AND ENGAGEMENT: A STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODEL ON ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOR OF TEACHERS

Charmaine V. Bañes, Elleine Rose A. Oliva

Abstract

This study sought to find the most appropriate model for the organization citizenship behavior (OCB) for private college teachers in Region XI with the factors of professionalism, organization socialization and engagement. The research method used was quantitative descriptive and causal research, which was analyzed using a structural equation model (SEM). The total number of students selected was 400 using stratified random sampling of students from different provinces in the Davao Region, and data were gathered through personal surveys using modified and validated questionnaires to provide content validity and reliability. Data were analyzed by statistical techniques such as mean, standard deviation, Pearson product-moment correlation, linear regression and SEM. The results showed that professionalism was perceived as high, organization socialization was very high, engagement was high, and organization citizenship behavior was very high. Significant relationships were observed among all variables, confirming that each exogenous variable had a significantly influence on OCB. Based on the three models that were generated, Model 3, which included organizational socialization as the biggest predictor, was identified as the best fit model for the study, as professionalism and engagement had less interaction with OCB. The results suggest that teachers' organizational citizenship behavior should be improved by boosting professionalism, improving the organizational socialization process, and increasing engagement level, especially by providing a supportive organizational climate and good career opportunities. Schools should thus adopt a holistic approach to nurture these inter-connected elements that could lead to more collaborative, proactive and committed teacher behaviors.
